Programs & Services
Supporting Families in Financial Crisis: When families face unexpected hardships - due to job loss, medical calamity, a spouse’s passing, domestic abuse, divorce among others - our volunteer Vincentians and staff work with them, one-on-one. Together, they create a plan, often involving assistance with back rent or overdue utility bills, in order to avoid homelessness and keeping a roof over their heads and their heat and water running.
Food Pantries: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha's large "choice" Food Pantry -along with pantries found at a number of SSVP parish conferences - supply perishable and non-perishable food to poor individuals and families who are struggling to manage their household bills on limited income.. Providing Food for the Homeless: Every weekday, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha addresses hunger and homelessness in Omaha by providing lunches to individuals experiencing homelessness, through our Holy Family Ministries. Providing Clothing for the Homeless: Also, each weekday, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha provides clothing and personal care items to individuals experiencing homelessness through our Holy Family Ministries' "Closet Door". Our Holy Family Ministries - providing food, clothing and personal care items for the homeless near downtown Omaha area each year - are crucial for those who rely on the Society for their basic needs. A homeless woman, named "Hannah", who stays outside, recently shared the following with the Society: "I mostly eat one meal a day which is the lunch I get from St. Vincent de Paul. I don’t have a lot of hope in my life right now, but I know that you guys are always there. I really appreciate the food and the really nice and helpful people who hand out lunches. I know I’d probably starve without it.” Serving Low-Income Seniors: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha also provides meals and household items to struggling seniors who live in nearby, low-income housing, helping alleviate some of their household expenses, so they can remain housed. Offering Affordable Basics at Our Thrift Stores: Through discounted clothing and household items, we help families stretch their dollars even further with our four area St. Vincent de Paul Omaha Thrift Stores. We also can provide thrift store items to struggling families - free of charge - through our SSVP parish conference voucher program. Providing Relief Services and Assistance Following Natural Disasters: When disaster strikes, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha is poised and ready to help neighbors in need, in both the short and long term. Such assistance ranges from being on-site, immediately following a disaster with blankets, clothing, etc, to providing monetary or material / household goods, vouchers to our thrift stores, as well as gift cards to a variety of stores and restaurants around the community, among others. |
