Remembering Krysta “Krissy” Gallagher McMillan
March 17, 1984 - February 16, 2025
It is with great sorrow that we remember Krysta “Krissy” Gallagher McMillan, a woman of strength, resiliency, and gracious kindness. While Krissy experienced homelessness, off-and-on, for more than 20 years, she was never defined by her circumstances. She was a devoted daughter and mother, a dedicated worker, a fierce advocate for her community, and a cherished friend to many.
Krissy had a heart full of love—for her family, her friends, and animals of all kinds. A protector by nature, she would go to great lengths to care for those she loved. Her spirit was generous, her loyalty steadfast, and her compassion boundless. Though she spent time in shelters and subsidized housing, Krissy often felt most at peace outdoors, where she found a sense of freedom and belonging. She endured Nebraska’s sweltering summers and brutal winters with remarkable strength, not only surviving but also helping others do the same. She shared her knowledge, her resources, and above all, her heart. To the world, Krissy may have been seen as “homeless,” but to those who knew her, she was so much more. She was a storyteller with a sharp wit, a dreamer with a big heart, a chef who could make something out of nothing, a crafter with a creative touch, and a child of God who rarely lost faith. |

She carried the weight of trauma, medical struggles, and mental health challenges, yet she always found a way to lift others—offering a smile, words of encouragement, or the very last of what she had to someone in greater need. She touched the lives of countless people and left a lasting mark on her community.
Krissy was adopted by her parents, Auburne Gallagher McMillan and Larry McMillan, whom she loved very much. She is survived by her children; her parents; her beloved dog, Chewie; and the many animals that found their way into her life—and her tent. She is also survived by the hundreds of people she befriended on her journey, many who considered her part of their ‘chosen family.'
At the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha, Krissy found not only support but also a family. She was a beloved member of our community—an advocate, a friend, and a light to so many. We were honored to walk alongside her, to learn from her strength, and to witness the kindness she shared so freely.
Krissy was loved beyond measure, and she will never be forgotten.
